We went to a market in Zhitomer today. Very cool. Got a lot of video and a few photos (above). There was a lot of hardware stalls with plenty of recycled plumbing fixtures, motor windings, rusty hinges and handles, etc. Some of the buildings are very old and very beautiful with dates from the 1890’s and early 1900’s. To think michael’s grandfather may have been brought down this very street and gone into these very buildings, holding onto his mother’s hand!
Here’s a picture of the scene at the computer room in the Ukr-Telecom building, which is one of the places where we can get online when computers are available. It costs about 20 cents an hour.
For those who have asked, especially John Russel, yes they do eat Chicken Kiev in Kiev! Here’s a picture to prove it.
We’ve decided to try to find an apartment, because the hotel bill is adding up and the accommodations aren’t so special. The bathroom facilities remind us of a prison setup. We’re posting a picture of the sink and tub. The sink doesn’t really work, except for the drain, so we can swing the faucet over from the tub to use it. The hot water runs out at 11 pm, and they turn the water off at midnight completely. In thd morning when you turn the water on, the pipes gurgle and explode at all the plumbing joints as they fill up with water again. You have to stand back or you get squirted.
There is no maid service on the weekend, so we shared a towel for two days. We really don’t see the point of staying here when we can get a more comfortable apartment for a third the price. We looked at a couple of units today and hope to make a decision tomorrow.
